null+1
September 9. 2024, Ftarri Tokyo
null+1, held on September 9th in Tokyo, Japan, was adapted to the unique and intimate characteristics of the venue, with a more compact configuration. The ground of our setup revolved around the Campanula and the snare drum. From these two core instruments, we created an expanded installation, utilising fish lines to extend the range of overtones and resonance within the space.
The venue also had a piano which we used for the concert. We've decided to connect fish lines to piano strings with the same pitches as the major tones of the Campanula, enhancing the overtone presence within the room.
The structure of the performance went as follows: at the beginning, each one played with a long fish line connected to the piano string. As we approached the piano, we began interacting with the remaining fish strings connected across the room, which were connected to certain tones. Slowly transitioning to our respective instruments, Catarina (on the Campanula) started engaging with the fish lines connecting both instruments. Meanwhile, Aya (on the snare drum) would project altered sounds on the snare drum, by manipulating sounds which Catarina provided and transmitted through the fish lines. This interactions, at times, disrupted the resonance and impulses of one another, adding a dynamic tension..
As the piece went on, both of us gradually transitioned to playing on our instruments directly, culminating on an improvisation moment that lasted 45 minutes.
